Donald R. Erickson
Donald Richard Erickson, age 91, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. Donald was born on October 9, 1921 in a second floor bedroom on Second Avenue in Sioux Falls. He was the youngest of 3 sons born to Lauritz and Marie Erickson. Donald married Betty Belle Tarr in Springfield, IL, on April 6, 1946. They have five children: Richard (Sharon) of Wenatchee, WA, David (Kathy) of Golden, CO, Lorrie (Jim) Meidinger of Chandler, AZ, Donna (Jim/Woody) of Sioux Falls, Mel (Jill) Soldotna, AK. He has nine grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Don served in the United States Army
Air Corp from 1942 until 1946 as a fighter pilot flying P51S and P40S. He was appointed Warden of the South Dakota State Penitentiary in 1963 and served in that position until 1974, when he became the Director of Corrections for the State of Idaho.
Don joined the Mason Trinity Lodge 200 in 1952. In 1957 he became a member of the El Riad Shrine. He is a member of the Clown Unit. Don served as the Big Clown in 1959.
Funeral Services for Don will be Thursday, August 8, 2013, at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. Interment will begin at 9:30 am at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 2:00 pm, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 pm, and a 7:00 pm Masonic Service, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main, Sioux Falls.
