Donald W. Grebin
Donald Wayne "Don" Grebin, 82, Sioux Falls, SD, the "Godfather of tennis in South Dakota", died February 11, 2014.
Don was born Feb. 5, 1932 in Sioux Falls, to Raymond and Myrtle (Kolaas) Grebin. A champion tennis player in high school and college, he graduated from Washington High in 1950, and after completing his military service in 1953, Don attended Augustana College, graduating in 1956.
Don taught at Axtell Park Junior High for 36 years and coached tennis at Washington High for 12 years. He served as the city tennis director for 17 years, was co-director of the South Dakota Open for 15 years and was the pro at Westward Ho Country Club in the 1970's. He won 25 sanctioned amateur men's doubles titles, including nine state doubles titles.
Don was named to the South Dakota Tennis Hall of Fame in 1992, USTA Northern Section Hall of Fame in 2002, Washington High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He also received Augustana's Lefty Olson Award in 1997 and the Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota High School Activities Association.
Don is survived by his wife, Janet (Duhr O'Donnell), and step-children, Chad (Cindy) O'Donnell and Niki (Gregg) Beldin; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; his son, Kevin (Deb) and daughters, Karlee Archer and Karrie VandeVoort; nine grand-children and seven great-grandchildren; his ?rst wife, Marlee Gefke; and a brother, Gene (Donna). Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
Visitation with the family will be at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., 4:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, February 13. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, February 14 at East Side Lutheran Church. The family will attend a private burial.
