Ellene Butler was born on April 1, 1927 in Salem, SD to James and Edna (Peterson) Butler. She grew up in Salem, attending St. Mary's grade and high school. After graduating she moved with her mother to Sioux Falls and began working at the Argus Leader. It was there she met Chet, her husband of 65 years. They married on May 1, 1947. She then began her full time career as a mom and homemaker to six children. Her second career as a swim instructor began as her children aged. She taught swimming to many children and adults at the Sioux Falls public pools, the YMCA, and Children's Care Hospital and School.
Ellene was a charter member of Christ the King Church, a member of the Catholic Daughters, past president of the Christ the King Altar Society, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She also belonged to the ladies leagues at both Elmwood Golf Course and Viewpoint Mesa Golf Course and was a former member of the Mr. and Mrs. Dance Club at the Arkota Ballroom. She loved dancing and she and Chet could really "cut a rug"! They even danced on the National Mall in Washington, DC at the World War II Memorial dedication in 2004. For many years Ellene provided caramel apples, with apples from her yard, not only to her kids but their friends on Covell Ave.
She and Chet happily enjoyed their retirement in Mesa, AZ where they wintered for almost 20 years. Most recently she resided at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Sioux Falls.
