James Friessen(1923 - 2014)

Jim Friessen

Jim Friessen died peacefully on May 9, 2014, surrounded by family and friends, the day following a massive stroke.

James (Jim) Friessen was born on August 11, 1923, in Larchwood, Iowa, to parents William and Elsie Friessen. In 1931, the family moved to Sioux Falls on a farm which is now Kuehn Park. He graduated from country grade school, which was located on the same farm. Jim attended Cathedral High.

Each morning before school during his senior year, Jim jumped into his 1941 Ford pick-up and hauled milk for his father and for area farmers. He continued to haul and own milk routes for the next 50 years.

In 1960, Jim and his parents built their new home on Marion Road where they all lived until their deaths. Jim gave loving care to his parents in their declining years. In the mid 1970's he started his landscape business. Working for his brother, Warren, Jim had many home and golf course projects which he finished to perfection with his 420 Ford tractors. He continued running these tractors, grading his own driveway until the day before he died.

Jim loved cars, motorcycles, and boats, owning over 200 new and used, and repaired many of the damaged ones. He also loved birds and animals, feeding whichever came to his door. He had his mother's love for flowers, of which he also had many.

Jim learned to play the accordion from Myron Floren. He also played the keyboard and had played for his sister, Delores, and cousins, three days before his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald; and his special friend, Patricia. He is survived by his sister, Delores Gibbs, San Marcos, TX; his brother, Warren (Hilda), Sioux Falls, SD; his sister, Donna (Tom) Cooper, Soldotna, AK; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity in Jim's name.

Mass of Resurrection will begin 11:00 am Thursday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with interment at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1:00 pm Wednesday, with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday evening and concluding with a 7:00 Prayer Service at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street.
