Jere L. Chapman

Jere L. Chapman, 63, of Vermillion, SD passed away Monday, May 12 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jere was born December 25, 1950 in Red Cloud, NE to Virgil and Dorothy (Etherton) Chapman. He graduated from Norfolk High School and attended Junior College. He married Jan on November 27, 1970 in Norfolk, and in 1971 joined the army serving for three years in Europe. Jere and Jan owned and operated many restaurants over the years, retiring in 2012.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic church and the Vermillion Knights of Columbus and enjoyed his grandchildren, golfing, pool league, pinochle, USD athletics and Nebraska football.

Jere is survived by his wife Jan of Vermillion, a son Neil (Paige) Chapman of Vermillion, a daughter Gail (Tony) Marino of Lincoln, NE, two brothers: Ken (Donna) Chapman of Norfolk and Gene (Cheryle) Chapman of San Antonio, TX and a sister Connie (Jerry) Gerling also of Norfolk. He is also survived by his Grandchildren: Colton, Ryne and Kara Chapman and Lucy Marino.

Funeral Mass will be 3:00 pm Friday, May 16 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion with burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Thursday, May 15 with a prayer service at 7:00 pm all at the church. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Agnes Charities or the Vermillion Backpack Program.
