Lowell G. Jahr, Sr.
Lowell G. Jahr, Sr., age 94, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Madison, died Friday, January 18, 2013, at Covington Heights Care Center, Sioux Falls.
Lowell Grant Jahr was born June 9, 1918, on the family farm near Hitterdal, MN, to Olof and Severina "Susie" (Quam) Jahr. He graduated from Hitterdal High School and the North Dakota State School of Forestry with a degree in botany. Lowell served in the US Army
during World War II
. He married Alice Torness on September 16, 1945 at Sisseton, SD. They moved to Madison where they entered into the greenhouse business with Lowell's brother, Stanton and his wife Clara, and where their family was raised. In 1956, Lowell became sole owner of Jahr's Greenhouses until the business was sold in 1974. Retirement permitted Alice and Lowell the opportunity to enjoy more time with family and friends, to travel, to volunteer more, and to winter in Mesa, AZ. Alice and Lowell moved to a retirement community in Sioux Falls in 2003.
Lowell was an active member and leader of church, civic, business, arts and charitable organizations throughout his life. Among the many organizations he served were Trinity Lutheran Church, Madison Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis Barbershop Quartet, Madison Music Association, Band Parents Association, Community-College Choir, Lake County Historical Society, Prairie Historical Society and Prairie Village, SDSU Prairie Repertory Theater Board, Sons of Norway, Boy Scouts, Madison Chamber of Commerce, Madison Development Corp., and the Lake Central School Board. In recognition of his leadership as Lt. Governor for the Minn-Dak District and other achievements, Lowell received Kiwanis' Hixson Award, in a ceremony attended by the Governor of South Dakota. He was awarded the prestigious John Robertson Gold Medal Memorial Award in Horticulture from South Dakota State University.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice in 2005; three brothers, Odin, Corliss, and Stanton, and a sister, Rhoda U. Jahr. Survivors include three sons, L. Grant (Linda) Jahr, Jr. of Huntley, IL, Paul (Madeleine) Jahr of Sioux Falls and Dale (Regina) Jahr of Rapid City; five grandchildren - Kristi (John) Gislason, Kari (John) Hollendoner, Alison Jahr, Elise Jahr and Christopher Lowell Jahr; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Jahr of Ulen, MN, sister, Alice Nickoley of Denver, CO.
Funeral Services will be 11 AM Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Madison with inurnment at Salem Cemetery, Hitterdal, MN at a later date. Visitation will be 5 - 7 PM Friday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 909 W. 33rd St., Sioux Falls and continues one hour prior to the service in Madison on Saturday. Condolences at www.ellsworthfh.com
