Melton Helberg, age 97, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, SD. The Committal Service will begin at 9:30 AM on Friday, August 23 at Hills of Rest Memorial Park with Memorial Service following at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. A visitation will begin at 2:00 PM on Thursday at George Boom Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends for visitation and viewing from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
Melton Henry Helberg was born on June 5, 1916 on a farm north of Wall Lake to Carl and Anna (Stender) Helberg. He graduated from Washington High School in 1934. Melton served in the US Army as Staff Sgt in Medical Corp. He was honorably discharged and a member of the American Legion.
Melton married Joyce E. Wells on June 10, 1942 in Dakota City, NE. Together, they made their home in Sioux Falls and were life-long members of First Lutheran Church. He started his auto body/fender career with Reardon Motors and then worked for Hutton Tufty/ Duke Tufty for 40 years before retiring. During his retirement, he worked part time for Builders Supply Company.
Melton enjoyed spending time at Lake Madison in the summer cabin that he built. He was an avid bowler, loved reading, watching Western movies, playing cards as a member of two card clubs and traveling.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 71 years, Joyce E. Helberg; son, Donald Helberg and his wife, Joyce L. of Sioux Falls; daughter, Pamela Andersen and her husband, Tom of Bellevue, WA; grandchildren, Josh Patten of Bellevue, WA, D'neka Patten of Los Angeles, CA, Mark (Marnie) Helberg of New Westminster, BC, Canada, Brianna (Nick) Cummings of Fort Collins, CO, and Chelsey Helberg of Denver, CO; four great grandchildren.
Melton was preceded in death by his son, Larry E. Helberg; granddaughter, Jeannie Baca; parents; brothers, Melvin and Melroy Helberg; infant sister, Stella Helberg.
