Flandreau - Myrtle Frances Olson, 86, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013 at Riverview Health Services, Flandreau. Mert was born January 12, 1927 on a farm northeast of Tea, SD to Ben and Elvida (Boyson) Barnes. She went to school in Tea and graduated from Flandreau High School with a GED in 1972. Mert worked in Sioux Falls and married Dale Olson on October 11, 1947 at St. John's Parsonage in Sioux Falls. They lived and worked in El Cajon, CA and Sioux Falls, SD before moving to Flandreau, SD in 1960 after purchasing the Coast-to-Coast Store. Mert also worked as a cook at Spafford Elementary School. After retiring in 1989, "Mertendale" spent their summers in the Black Hills where they made many memories with their family. Mert was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, WELCA and enjoyed baking, sewing and Hardanger, a Norwegian stitching that she learned while living in the Hills. She passed their Norwegian heritage and traditions on to her family by teaching them the art of making and eating lefse and other Norwegian goodies. Mert is survived by her husband Dale, two daughters, Jo Barboza (Keoki Young), Kamuela, HI and Jackie (Mike) Skroch, Flandreau; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Carol Olson, Pierre; one brother Carroll (Corinne) Barnes, Sioux Falls; and one sister-in-law Joyce Olson, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her son Jay P. Olson, parents, two brothers, Duane and Roger and three sisters, Betty, Leona and Pat. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is 4:00-7:00 pm Wednesday with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel. www.skrochfc.com
