Ruth D. Scheinost-Johnson
Ruth D. Scheinost-Johnson, 97, of Pierre, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Avera St. Mary's in Pierre. Visitation will be 6:00-7:00pm, Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre. Visitation will conclude with a prayers service at 7:00pm. Funeral Services will be at 9:30am, Monday, April 8, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Pierre. Interment will follow at 1:30pm, Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Winner Cemetery in Winner, SD.
Ruth was born October 8, 1915 at the farm home in Tripp County to Thomas and Christine (Duus) Hurd. She grew up in the rural community, attending country school and 3 years of secondary at Ideal Consolidated High School, graduating at Algona, IA in 1932. She attended one-year postgraduate at O'Neil, NE.
In 1937, she married James R. Scheinost and to this union were born three children, Robert, Thomas, and JoAnn. They resided in O'Neil, NE until 1941 when they returned to Tripp County, later moving to Winner, SD. In 1951, Ruth went to work in the Tripp County Courthouse after the illness of her husband, who passed away in 1957. Ruth spent over 20 years as Tripp County Deputy Auditor, Auditor, and Clerk of Courts, during which she served as President of the South Dakota County Officers Association in 1956-57. In 1970, she resigned her position as Tripp County Clerk of Courts and was united in marriage to G. Allan Johnson of Pierre, where they made their home until the time of her death. Her husband passed away in March 1997.
After moving to Pierre, she served as a Legal Secretary in the South Dakota Department of Transportation and in 1975 took over the duties as Clerk of Courts of Stanley County. In 1980 Ruth retired and she and her husband spent many years traveling and spending winters in Mission, Texas.
Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pierre and a 50 year member of the South Dakota Business and Professional Women's Clubs in both Winner and Pierre. She served as the S.D. BPW State President in 1967. Ruth was also a member of Saint Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, the Pierre Senior Citizens, and the Tripp County Historical Society.
Survivors include sons Robert (Karen) Scheinost, Colome, SD; Thomas (Nancy) Scheinost, Fort Pierre, SD; and one daughter JoAnn (Neil) Hoffine, Sundance, Wyo.; Stepson Gerald (Ruth Ann) Johnson, Pierre, SD, and stepdaughter Betty (Eldon) Garrett, Montrose, SD.; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; ten step great grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, a twin brother, Robert, who died in infancy, brother Calvin Hurd and sister Margaret Novotny.
Ruth spent the last five years of her life at the Dakota Heritage House in Pierre, SD and in her words…"I've been here over five years and there's no better place to be!" She will be missed by everyone who has ever known her.
