Madison, SD - Vern C. Woodard, age 90, died at Bethel Lutheran Home on April 5, 2014

He was born on March 12, 1924 at White, SD to Roy and Alice (Rusch) Woodard. He married Elta Kurtz at Flandreau, SD on December 27, 1946.

He is survived by his wife - Elta of Madison, Two sons - Dirk (Eva) of Sedelia, CO and Kurt (Judy) of Sioux Falls. One daughter - Vicki (Rick) Sterling of Madison. 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev Stephen White officiating. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery, White, SD.

He grew up in White graduating from high School. He served in the US Army in Italy, North Africa and toured with the USO selling War Bonds. After the service he continued his education with a bachelors degree from South Dakota State College and a masters in social work from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He worked in the SD Department of Social Services for 27 years. Governor Wollman appointed him Secretary of Human Services. He then worked in the Denver Regional office of the US Department of Health and Human Services until he retired and moved to Madison in 1991.

He was a member of the Madison VFW Post.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
