Wilbur H. Mielke
Hartford, SD - Wilbur H. Mielke, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, January 28, 2014.
A visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Friday, January 31, 2014, at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls, with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and a Time of Sharing at 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be 10:30 am Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 46448 263rd St., Hartford, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Wilbur Herman Mielke, the son of Herman and Anna (Martens) Mielke was born May 11, 1921, in Hartford, SD. He served proudly in World War II
as a member of the U.S. Army Unit 555th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. Wilbur's battalion was among those that liberated Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp. He was often used as an interpreter for captured German soldiers because of his German speaking abilities.
On October 25, 1947, Wilbur was united in marriage with Lois Harmon in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a co-owner of Ford Farm Machinery in Sioux Falls, and farmed in the Hartford area for over 40 years.
Wilbur was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, was an elder for 22 years, and served as the sexton of the church cemetery for 40 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, V.F.W
., and a charter member of Minnehaha Rural Water Corporation as well as serving on the board.
Survivors include his loving wife, Lois, Sioux Falls; son, Wayne (Dawn) Mielke, Hartford, SD; daughters, Patricia (Larry) Rodriguez, Honolulu, HI, Lori (Doug) Richards, Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Darin (Erica) Richards, Breann Richards, Siri (Casey) Buller, Allison Mielke; great-granddaughter, Emmy Richards; and brother, Marvin Mielke, Hartford. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lydia Stride and Edna Storkenberg; and brother, Fritz Mielke.
