Bernie Buchheim passed away on Monday, August 19, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.
Bernard Lee "Bernie" Buchheim was born to Gus & Viola (Leisinger) Buchheim on August 20, 1934, in Humboldt, SD. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1952 and went on to college at SDSU. Bernie was drafted by the New York Yankees as a pitcher and spent time on their Farm Club in Oklahoma. He was released from the Farm Club and was offered a contract with the Milwaukee Braves, but passed up the opportunity and chose to return to his hometown. He continued to play amateur baseball in Wessington Springs where he enjoyed many friends and met his future wife and her family. Bernie married Kathleen (Kay) Haddorff on September 13, 1955.
Bernie started working for Northwestern Bell Telephone in December of 1956 and then retired from AT&T after 27 yrs. During this time he enjoyed 15 years of coaching Bantam, Teener and Amateur baseball in Sioux Falls. In 1989, he established Telephone Systems & Service (a family business) in Sioux Falls, SD. Bernie continued to work the business with his family.
Bernie enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling with his sons and friends. Bernie is listed in the Sioux Falls Bowling Hall of Fame and attained a 300 game at the age of 75. He attended the National Bowling Tournaments for 25 consecutive years. Some of the best times were spent camping with his family; family was of the utmost importance to Bernie. Bernie and Kay have been members of Saint Lambert Parish for 45 years.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife Kay; his children, Martin, Rita (Dan) Renner, Donna (Gene) Jensen, Brett (Marlys) Buchheim, Kristin (Mike) Staudenmier; and daughters-in-law, Virginia Buchheim and Ava Buchheim. Surviving grandchildren & great grandchildren are, Ryan, Thomas (Kari), Lyndsay (Brett), Jamie, Bryce, Danielle, Courtney, Rachel, Caitlyn, Nicholas, Hannah, Brandon, Alejandra, & Landon. His sister, Sheri (Larry) Harner and sister-in-law, Opal Uthe, also survive Bernie.
Preceding Bernie in death are sons, Thomas James (infant) and Blake Buchheim; his parents, Gus & Viola; brother, Charles; sister, Joann Reichardt; his mother and father-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 am Friday, at St. Lambert Catholic Church, with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 3:00 pm Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue, and will continue at the church with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm., followed by a 7:00 Prayer Service.
