Bonnie R. Bunch

Bonnie R. Bunch, age 85, passed away January 1, 2014 in Sioux Falls, SD. A celebration of her life will be held Friday January 17 at 3 PM at Spirit of Peace UCC Church, 6509 S. Cliff Ave, Sioux Falls, with scattering of ashes later in the year in Oregon. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Banquet, 900 E.8th St, Sioux Falls, or Heifer International.

Bonnie was born February 27, 1928 in Weld County CO to Christian Martin Christensen and Frances Elizabeth (Trett) Christensen. She received her early education there, and graduated with a degree in English from Colorado State College of Education, where she also later earned an MA in English. After college Bonnie set out for adventure by taking a teaching job in Juneau AK. Aboard ship from Seattle to Juneau, she met her future husband, Robert D. Bunch, of Portland OR. They married in Juneau and lived there for several years before moving back to Oregon. Bonnie moved to Sioux Falls SD after Bob died in 2004. She taught high school English for 25 years in Grants Pass OR, and summers found her raising a garden, canning fruit, and making pickles, jams, and jellies. She was a talented seamstress. Words in any form were a lifelong passion and Bonnie was a voracious reader, wrote prose and poetry, and solved the most complicated word puzzles. She enjoyed attending book clubs and playing cards and games with friends. Her other love was travel, and after retiring she journeyed to the United Kingdom , Alaska, South America, New Zealand , Australia and Europe with friends and family. In her 60's she overcame her fear of water and learned to swim so that she could snorkel in the Galapagos Islands. To the end of her life, she had a beautiful smile, an infectious giggle, a great sense of humor, and was a staunch supporter of her church as well as liberal, progressive, and humanitarian causes. She was proud of her Danish heritage and of being the daughter of an immigrant. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Russell Cheairs, Peggy Biggs, Edith Norris, and Edward Christensen, and by Bob Bunch, her husband, ex-husband, and lifelong companion. She is survived by her children, Bonnie Bunch, Sioux Falls SD, Lindy Bunch (Steve Tully), Bozeman MT, and Robin Bunch (Dennis Lajoy), Portland OR as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.
