Charles Henry Pennington

Charles Henry Pennington, 83, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Dow Rummel Village, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A memorial and celebration of his life will be held Monday, May 13 at 2:00 in the Halladay-Peterson Chapel in the Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with Rev. Tim Worthington officiating. Charles was born October 31, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas. He enlisted in the navy at the age of fourteen and served on a naval ship in the Pacific Ocean for over four months before receiving orders to return home. He re-enlisted in 1946 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1954. He attended Texarkana Junior College in 1955 and was united in marriage to Janis Lansdale on August 28, 1954. Charles transferred to Texas Tech, in Lubbock, Texas, in 1956 and graduated in 1958 with a B.B.A. in Industrial Management. His career as a Safety Engineer took his family to various locations in Texas, Oklahoma and finally Arizona where they lived for almost forty years. Most recently, Charles and his wife Janis moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where his son and daughter-in-law were able to offer support. He had a fantastic sense of humor and loved laughter. Charles was an avid fisherman and his family has many photographs of him holding on to prize catches with great joy! Charles was a naturally generous person who was more comfortable giving than receiving. As a faith-filled man, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Tucson and served for many years in ministry to local nursing homes.

Charles is survived by his wife Janis Pennington; his sons, Father Matthew Pennington of San Luis Obispo, California and Dr. John Pennington; daughter-in-law, Mary Pennington, and granddaughter Kelsey Pennington of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother William Pennington and his wife Faye Pennington of Houston, Texas and sister Delfina McGee of Marshall, Texas.
