Donna Jean Arends, 78, went to be with her Lord on February 16, 2014 at Centennial Hospice Cottage after a long battle with illness. She was born on August 18, 1935 to Guy and Emma (Albertson) White in Montrose, SD. She grew up on the family farm near Humboldt, SD. She had a love of music and was active at Humboldt High School in music and drama. After graduation from high school, she moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she attended Augustana College. She continued to be involved in the musical programs while at Augustana and attained an elementary teaching certificate. She then taught fifth grade at Lowell Elementary.
Donna then met and married the love of her life, Vernon Arends. They married on February 23, 1956 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. She then dedicated her life to caring for her husband and 4 children. She prepared many amazing dishes and was a skilled baker. She loved children and they gave her great pleasure. She also had a special talent for finding the best deals. Her family enjoyed the many bargains she gifted.
She also was active at First United Methodist Church where she was a member for 57 years.
Donna leaves behind her dear husband of 58 years, Vernon Arends of Sioux Falls. She is also survived by her children, Bob (Nancy) Arends, Olathe, KS; Pamela (Rock) King, Huntington Beach, CA; Craig (Julie) Arends, Sioux Falls, SD; Collette (Danny) Bliss, Harrisburg, SD.
Survived also by 9 grandchildren, Katie (Mark) Crabb, Fond Du Lac, WI; Sam (Mallory) Arends, Olathe, KS; Jarod Johnson, Austin Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD; Quinn Johnson, Harrisburg, SD; Jessemine King, Arend King, Huntington Beach, CA; Emma Arends, Matthew Arends, Sioux Falls, SD.
Her 3 great grandchildren, Hudson (6), Everett (4), and Nolan Crabb (18 mo.), Fond Du Lac, WI, gave her much joy in these last years.
Also survived by sisters, June Webster of Hannah, WY, Sharon Ellis of Sioux Falls and brother, Robert (Ruth) White of Montrose, SD.
She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers (Marion and Lawrence) and brother in law Don Ellis and Wes Webster.
Visitation will be Friday evening at Heritage Funeral home with family present from 6 to 8 pm, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm. A celebration of her life will be at 11 am, Saturday at 1st United Methodist Church.
