Dorothy M. "Dort" Heckt

Age 89 of Golden Valley, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 23, 2014. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was born June 4, 1924 in Sioux Falls, SD where she graduated from Washington High School in 1942 and the University of South Dakota in 1946. Dorothy married Melvin Heckt on September 5, 1948 and lived in Iowa City for 2 years before moving to Minneapolis where they raised their family.

Her deep faith and love for her family and friends was evidenced in the many ways she touched others' lives with her gifts of letter writing (especially her annual Sioux Falls Newsletter), playing piano at nursing homes and sharing her joyful humor with everyone she met. She would always bring laughter while recounting her many misadventures that came to be known as "Dort Stories". These tales were recorded in several Minneapolis Tribune Almanac articles and compiled in a book entitled "The Paper Hanger's Pants and Other Dort Stories".

Dort is preceded in death by her parents Blaine and Eloise, her brother Blaine and her beloved son Paul. She is survived by her husband Mel and children Janice, Mary, Barbara Kenutis (Robert), Bill (ex-wife Kari) and Tom (Katie) and Paul's widow Kathy. She is also survived by 11 cherished grandchildren: Ann, Emily and John Heckt; Sarah, Andrew and Matthew Kenutis; Melanie, Winston and Jackson Heckt; Olivia and Alex Heckt. Also her brother Dick Simons and sister-in-law Georgia Simons and many nieces and nephews.
