Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:30pm, Monday, August 26, 2013 at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings.

Elsie was born to Christian and Evelyn Winther on January 13, 1933. She lived in the Arlington area during her youth graduating from Arlington High School in 1951.

Elsie attended General Beadle College in Madison obtaining her one year teaching certificate in 1952 and her two year teaching certificate in 1954. She taught school in Eastern South Dakota from 1953 to 1957.

Elsie met her true love and soul mate, Karl Jensen, and they were married on June 23, 1956. Following their marriage, Elsie and Karl resided in Brookings and raised their three children, Linette, Kevin and Patricia.

Elsie dedicated herself to her marriage and raising her children. When Patricia entered kindergarten, Elsie enrolled at South Dakota State University and Dakota State College (taking classes only when her kids were in school). Elsie obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1974 with Karl and her three children beaming with pride at her graduation.

Elsie then taught school as a third grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School in the Brookings School System. She was a dedicated teacher and loved making a difference in her students' lives. She retired from teaching in 1995 after having taught third grade for 20 years.

Elsie was active in many organizations. She was a Charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church having served in many capacities: church council, Sunday School teacher, office volunteer and circle member. She was a Girl Scout troop leader for many years. She was a member of three bridge groups, Literary Club, ADK, extension club and Brookings Retired Teachers. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Whenever and wherever there was a need, Elsie would fill it.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Karl, her parents, Christian and Evelyn Winther, and her brother, Dwayne Winther.

Elsie is survived by her three children: Linette (David) Ulrickson, Canton, South Dakota; Kevin (Gina), Sioux Falls, South Dakota.; and Patricia, Kansas City, Missouri; her five grandchildren, Hillary (Luke) Dingledine, Elkhorn, Nebraska, Tanner Ulrickson, Canton, South Dakota, and Regan, Anika and Kaia Jensen, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one sister, Arlyce (Mel) Thorne, Brookings, South Dakota and one brother, Elden (Delores) Winther, Aberdeen, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews and close friends.

Elsie will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, family and friends. She taught us that God is always faithful, that family is important, that service to friends and persons in need is vital and that determination and hard work are expected.

Donations in Elsie's memory may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, the of South Dakota or The Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
