After working on a farm, he enlisted in the Navy in April 1944. He trained at Farragut Naval Training Station in Idaho and spent the last year of the war at Hunter's Point in San Francisco. After the war, he attended Iowa State University and received his bachelor's degree in 1950. He completed his master's degree in agricultural economics in 1952 and began work with the Iowa State Extension Service. Herb married Janna Juchems on June 1, 1956 in Steamboat Rock, IA. In 1963, he moved the family to Brookings, SD and began a teaching assistantship at South Dakota State University. Along with his teaching, classwork, gardening, and home projects, he found time to take the boys camping and coached several little league ball teams. He completed his Ph.D. in economics in 1968 and continued woodworking and taking care of grandchildren.

Herb was active in Methodist Men, choir, and Golden K Kiwanis. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 57 years, Jan; sons, Raymond (Kristin) of Sioux Falls and Mark (Chris) of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Neil and Matt Allen of Wichita, KS, Sam and Seth Allen of Sioux Falls and Brian and Joe Welch of Sioux Falls.
