Judy was born November 5, 1943, in Chicago, IL, to Eugene and Dorothy (Schilder) Thompson. She grew up in Garretson, SD, keeping busy with her family and her love of sewing. She graduated from Garretson High School in 1961 and attended college at Minnesota State Mankato and University of South Dakota.

She was united in marriage to Tom Kruse on August 12, 1962, in Garretson, SD. Judy and Tom moved to Hull, IA, where Tom was the high school band director. The couple moved to Fort Dodge, IA, where Tom taught at Iowa Central Community College. Judy and Tom then moved to Cherokee, IA, in 1974 where Tom was the band director at Washington High School. Her passion for sewing led her to be a seamstress at Mr. G's Men's Clothing store for many years before she opened up her own alterations business in her home. She also spent a lot of time supporting the band by making the flags and uniforms. After having health issues, she retired and closed The Sewing Center. She and Tom decided to relocate to Texas in 2009 to enjoy the Rio Grande Valley and the warm weather. When Tom passed away in 2011, Judy continued living in Texas until moving to Vernon Hills in 2014 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Judy was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. She had a great love of being the passenger on her husband's Honda Gold Wing and was a member of the Western Iowa Cycle Riders and the RETREADS. She and Tom took many trips all across the United States enjoying the open road.

She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, and by her parents, parents-in-law, brother Richard Thompson, sisters-in-law Victoria Thompson and Janice Cuthrell.

Survivors include her son Scott (Judy) Kruse, Hoffman Estates, IL, and her daughter Stacy Kruse, Villa Park, IL; her treasured grandchildren Jordan, Chase, and Riley Kruse, Hoffman Estates, IL; her brother David (Bev) Thompson of California; her aunts Betty Newberg and Ellen (Bob) Doese, all of Sioux Falls, SD, and many brothers- and sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
