Marion Warnkvist

Marion I. Warnkvist was born June 16, 1919 in rural Alcester, SD to parents Carl and Beda M. (Berglund/Nordling) Peterson. She died May 8, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at 93 years of age.

Marion was educated at Higgins and Finn country schools, graduating from the 8th grade in 7 years. She continued to read, learn and exercise her mind all her life.

Marion was married to Howard Warnkvist for nearly 50 years. They experienced lean years in the early 1940's, but were resourceful and successfully purchased their farm in Starbuck, MN in 15 years, in the late 1950's and 1960's. Marion was a true farmer's wife. She cared for the home, did the cooking and baking, and helped with the general outdoor chores such as raising chickens, tending the garden and milking cows. When a visitor came at meal or coffee time Howard ushered them in to be fed. They loved to travel, taking their little Chevette and tear drop trailer to Texas to spend time with friends, to Florida, and to Canada and Northern Minnesota to fish for Northern Pike and Walleye. She visited family in Sweden three times with Howard and once with her daughter. She also enjoyed bus tours to Phoenix, Branson, Great Smokey Mountains, Mackinac Island and Niagara Parks and Canyons. After Howard passed away in 1990, the farm was sold and Marion moved back to Alcester. She picked up relationships with old friends and family. She was a league bowler in Starbuck and again in Canton and Akron. Walking, reading, Scrabble, canasta, Christmas, Halloween, crosswords puzzles, baking bread, pies, cookies, biscotti's, cinnamon rolls and just plain good food were some of her favorite pastimes. Marion always remembered many of her friends and family with birthday cards and greetings.

Grateful for sharing her life are her daughter Judith (Gerald) Solem, Forest Lake, MN; grandson Nels Solem, St. Paul, MN, granddaughter Nancy (John) Strachan and great granddaughter Hannah Strachan all of Mora, MN; brother Leroy (Gail) Peterson, Alcester, sisters Leona (Earl) Beuckens, Green Valley, AZ, Shirley (Paul) McKee, Alcester, Winona (Marv) Boles, Florence, MO; and sisters-in-law Fern Peterson, Alcester and Donna Peterson, Sioux City, IA; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, brothers Emil and Clarence Nordling, Arthur Peterson, Raymond Peterson, and sisters Madelyn Osman, Margaret Binkerd and Frances Beuckens.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Monday, May 13 at Alcester Baptist Church with visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
