Mary I. DeWit Obituary
Mary I. DeWit

Sioux Falls - Mary I. DeWit, 87, of Sioux Falls, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thur., Oct. 27, 2016 at Bethany Home in Brandon after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Private burial will precede her memorial service which starts at 10:30 AM Mon., Oct. 31 at First Christian Reformed Church, Sioux Falls. Visitation begins at 2 PM Sun., Oct. 30 at the church, where the family will greet friends from 2-4 PM. George Boom Funeral Home & Cremation Services is handling arrangements.

Mary Ilene Slobe, daughter of William and Minnie (Vander Woude) Slobe, was born Nov. 28, 1928 in Colton, SD. After attending grade school in Renner and Valley Springs, the family moved to Norwalk, CA. Mary graduated from Excelsior High School there and then worked at the Roosevelt Naval Base. After her father's death, Mary moved back to Sioux Falls with her mother and sister, Ilene. Upon her return, Mary attended Nettleton Business College and began work at Sioux Valley Hospital, which began her love of the medical field.

Mary was united in marriage with Marvin DeWit on May 10, 1949 in Sioux Falls. The couple was blessed with the birth of 2 sons, Douglas and Ronald. She enjoyed her role as a stay-at-home wife and mother. As her sons were further along in their education, Mary began her career as a medical transcriptionist at the Laboratory of Clinical Medicine. She loved her work and treasured the people she worked with as some of her dearest friends. She retired after 28 years of service.

The family enjoyed vacation times throughout their years. As empty nesters, Mary and Marv enjoyed traveling around the country and the world. Mary lost the love of her life when Marv passed away on Mar. 20, 1998. In 2001, Mary took her children and grandchildren on the vacation of a lifetime to Europe. Her greatest love was spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary was a person with a deep and abiding faith that provided guidance, comfort and peace in times of both joy and sadness. She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church for over 65 years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Doug (Jan) DeWit and Ron (Lex) DeWit, both of Sioux Falls; 4 grandchildren, Craig (Rebecca) DeWit, Jaron (Heather) DeWit, Lindsey (Ryan) Bender and Ashley (Jonah) Luzier, all of Sioux Falls; 10 great-grandchildren, Aftyn, Haley, Aiden, Elijah and Judah DeWit, Mickila and Addison DeWit, Natalie Bender and Sophie and Ben Luzier; and many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 49 years, Marv, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William and Minnie Slobe; her sister, Ilene Cowan; and a daughter-in-law, Leann "Joy" DeWit.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mary's memory to Mission Haiti, PO Box 2175, Sioux Falls, SD 57101 or www.mission-haiti.org.
