Sister Olive Ewalt

Sister Olive Ewalt, 95, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died September 2, 2014 at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Olive will be Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A wake service will be Friday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Reverend Joseph Sheehan will be celebrant and homilist.

Burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Mary Ewalt was born March 24, 1919 at Webster, SD to Anastasia (Gaikowski) and Anton Ewalt. She received her elementary education at St. Joseph Elementary, Grenville, SD and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Grenville, SD in 1937. Josephine entered Presentation Convent September 1, 1937and made her first profession of vows August 12, 1940.

Sister Olive graduated from St. Luke's Presentation School of Nursing in 1942 and attended post-graduate workshops in pediatric and surgical nursing at S. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. Sister ministered at St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen from 1939-1947, was Nursing Supervisor during the polio epidemic 1949-1950, worked in Pastoral Care and as receptionist from 1974-1999. She also served at St. Joseph's Hospital (Queen of Peace), Brady Memorial Home, Mitchell, SD and Americana Nursing Home, Aberdeen, SD. Sister spent 1950-1954 at Presentation Children's Home in Sioux Falls, SD as supervisor of the boy's dorm. Sister retired at Presentation Convent in 2005 after being organist and assistant sacristan at Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen, SD for 6 years. For twenty-eight years she worked with Meals on Wheels in Aberdeen. Sister Olive always enjoyed her family and working with children, nursing students, doctors and staff.

Sister Olive is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters: one sister, Clara Thomas, Tyler, TX, a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ewalt, Webster, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Anastasia and Anton, one sister, Esther Lesnar and 3 brothers, Tony, Joe and Roman Ewalt.

Nephews of Sister Olive will serve as active casket bearers.
