Perry Pollard

Perry Pollard, Sioux Falls, SD, died June 10, 2013, in Sioux Falls. He was 93.

Perry Leroy Pollard was born on July 24, 1919, at Lakeside, NE, to George and Clara (Hendrickson) Pollard. He was raised in Lakeside where he graduated from high school in 1937. Perry learned to fly in the 1930's, and was a licensed pilot for over 60 years. Even in his fordable years, Perry loved the thought of travel. In 1935, he opened Perry's Travel Service in Lakeside. He then worked for the railroad, a job that solidified his life-long passion for trains. In 1939, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska.

On August 13, 1940, Perry enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served overseas during WWII. He received his honorable discharge on December 31, 1945, as a Lt. Colonel. Perry attended the University of Colorado, the Municipal University of Omaha, and the Nebraska State College in Chadron, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1951.

On June 10, 1960, he was united in marriage with Janet Wirzbach in Sioux Falls. The Pollard family loved taking trips throughout the US and abroad, and enjoyed vacations in the Black Hills and northern Minnesota. He retired from Western Airlines in 1981. Janet and Perry cherished spending time with the family. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2000.

A member of the "Greatest Generation," Perry held God, family and community close to his heart. He was dedicated to serving others. Perry was an active member of First Baptist Church where he served on the Diaconate, was a member of the Downtown Lions Club since 1956, National Model Railroaders Assoc., American Legion, Life member of the VFW and Elks Club, Air Force Assoc., Hump Pilots Assoc., and the AF Reserve Officers Association, as well as a number of other organizations and groups.

Blessed with an outgoing spirit, Perry made friends wherever he would go. He always put the needs of others before his own. A compassionate, loving and caring man, he will be forever missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Richard E. Pollard, Lennox, SD, John P. Pollard (Lynn) Sioux Falls SD, Mark T. Pollard (Caren Peck), Sioux Falls SD; daughter, Kimberly Krueger (David), Albert Lea, MN; and many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, at First Baptist Church, 1401 S. Covell Avenue. Visitation will begin at noon, Thursday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the South Dakota Lions Eye and Tissue Bank (SDLTB).
