Phillip Hagen

Phil Hagen, Sioux Falls, SD, died January 9, 2017, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, SD. He was 89.

Phillip E. Hagen was born on November 3, 1927, in New London, Minnesota, to Oden and Rena (Johnson) Hagen. He graduated from New London High School in 1945. Shortly thereafter in January, 1946, he received his US Army basic training at Shepard Field, TX. He then studied for ten weeks at weather observer school at Chanute Field, IL. Phil served as a weather observer at an Air Field north of Tokyo, Japan, and then was discharged from service on July 1, 1947.

Phil entered Pharmacy School at the University of Minnesota in the Fall of 1947, and graduated in the Spring of 1951.

He was united in marriage to Margie Hagen in Coon Valley, Wisconsin, on December 23, 1950. In 1955, he purchased a pharmacy and gift shop in St. Paul, MN. He operated the store with his wife until 1976. The couple moved to Hawaii in 1976 where in 1980, Phil earned a master's degree in Public Health and the University of Hawaii. Two years later, he purchased a pharmacy and gift shop in Zumbrota, MN. He and Margie operated this business until 1990.

Following their retirement in 1990, Phil and Margie moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he volunteered as a van driver for the DAV and the VA Hospital. He also volunteered for several years delivering Meals-On-Wheels. They moved to Sioux Falls in 2004.

Phil enjoyed card games and reading non-fiction. He maintained a particular interest in studying US Presidents. In his younger years growing up in Minnesota, he enjoyed attending many local Minnesota Twins and Vikings games, and later, liked watching the Twins and Vikings on television.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Margie Hagen, Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Eleanor Pettersen and her husband, George, Crosby, MN, Rhoda Benjamin of Sioux Falls, SD; two nieces; two nephews; six great-nieces and nephews; and three great-great-nieces.

Memorial Services will be held 1:30 pm Sunday, January 22, 2017, at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 2208 W. LaQuinta Street, Sioux Falls. The family will be present following the memorial service to greet friends.
