Flandreau-Raymond Henry Buchholtz, 97, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Edgewood Vista. He was born April 22, 1916 in Millarton, ND to Henry E. and Alice (Myers) Buchholtz. He attended school in Millarton. In 1934 he moved with his family to Flandreau, SD, where Ray worked on his grandfather's and uncle's farms. He served in the Army during World War II with the 147th Field Artillery, Battery B. He earned a Bronze Star in the Pacific Theater, seeing combat in the Philippines, and served in Australia, and New Guinea. When he returned to Flandreau in 1945, he worked as a carpenter with his father. On November 18, 1950, Raymond married Anna Nelson Ambroson in Pipestone, MN. Ray worked for the South Dakota State Highway Department for over 25 years, retiring in 1979. Ray and Ann moved to Edgewood Vista in July 2003. His wife preceded him in death on August 8, 2006. Ray was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Kelley-Porter American Legion Post #70 and Flandreau VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and tinkering in the basement. Ray is survived by his daughter Cynthia (Rick) Drennen, Flandreau, son-in-law Doug Chadwick, Redmond, WA, step-children, Joanne Ambroson and Richard (Gladys) Ambroson, nieces, Madonna (Wayne) Steensma and Barbara Jones, all of Sioux Falls, five grandchildren, Eric (Tami) Ambroson, Sarah (Jerome) Lang, Michael Drennen, Lauren and Ryan (Jana) Chadwick, six great-grandchildren, Nicholas Ambroson, Nathan Lang, Logan and Braxton Drennen, Elizabeth and Natalie Chadwick. He is also survived by two brothers, Henry, Aurora, SD and Leo (Phyllis), Eugene, OR, sister-in-law Ruth Buchholtz, Des Moines, IA and several nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his wife Ann, daughter Kathryn, his parents, two sisters, Leona and Helen and a brother Edwin. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday, January 3, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation begins at 4:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 pm prayer service. www.skrochfc.com
