Thomas Patrick Dirks (62), caring husband, loving father, and likely the world's best grandfather passed away peacefully from a heart attack Tuesday morning.
Tom's greatest joy came from the hours he spent in the driveway, sandbox and backyard with his grandson and namesake Tommy (5) and his granddaughter Anabel (2) who he believed was the prettiest little girl in the world. He leaves a legacy of matchbox cars, bug collecting tools, camouflage techniques, and indestructible love that will serve his precious grandchildren for decades to come who will always remember their "PO".
Tom and his wife Nancy of Sioux Falls (59) made a tremendous and formidable team as they navigated a happy and sometimes challenging life together and ultimately decided that being co-pilots for 34 years was their best strategy. Tom and Nancy demonstrated the value of vows in their loyalty to each other. They both spent 21 years faithfully delivering the Argus Leader and Shopping News every day, despite all manner of weather, to their grateful rural clients of southeast South Dakota and Southwest Minnesota, many of whom became dear friends. Tom's unseen dedication to his work is an example to all.
His daughter Tamme has been the consistent sparkle in his eye since she came into this world 32 years ago. Tom felt that the woman she has become was his proudest accomplishment and he never missed making Valentines Day and birthdays special for her. He taught her loving patience, deep kindness, and how to be a good driver. Tamme cherished her father and he loved her with the selfless love that is only known by parents toward their children.
Tom, known as "Red" to his close friends hosted a weekly party where his buddies would gather on the porch to barbeque, enjoy friendship, and solve the world's problems or at least the problems affecting N. Summit avenue. Tom was the guide to many people, and always sought out those in need, simply trying to make lives a little better without passing judgment.
Additional survivors include his mother Lucille Dirks of Huron (88) and sisters Kathy Eining of Huron (60) and Carol Dirks of Madison (55). Tom is preceded in death by his father, Earl Dirks, and his step-daughter, Mary Williams.
A visitation will be Wednesday evening July 3rd at the Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls from 5-7:30 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls Friday July 5th at 2:00 PM.
