Viola A. Whipkey Knutson, 92, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community.
Viola A. Anderson was born September 3, 1921 at Hendricks, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Singsaas Lutheran Church in Hendricks, MN. Viola grew up in Brookings County, SD where she received her elementary education in the rural schools of the area. She attended high school in Astoria, SD where she graduated in 1938. Following high school, she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, earning a teaching certificate.
On November 28, 1946, she was united in marriage with Warren Whipkey at Hendricks, MN. She taught school in Castlewood and Baltic, SD. Her husband, Warren died on September 15, 1968. She later returned to college and earned her BA degree from Augustana. She most recently taught school in Garretson, SD prior to her retirement in 1982.
Viola married Perwin Knutson on April 3, 1982 in Brandon, SD. She had been a member of Brandon Lutheran Church since 1960. For several years, she and Perwin enjoyed spending their winter months in Pharr, TX. Perwin preceded her in death on October 28, 2006.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Sheila (Orville) Neisingh of West Plains, MO, Sharlene (Gregory Turbek) Estey of Poughkeepsie, NY, John (Terri) Whipkey of Brandon, SD and Tammy (Paul) Swanson of Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Nichole McClarin, Amber Estey, Jeremy (Ashley) Estey, Cody Whipkey, Zachary Swanson, and Zane Swanson; and one step-grandchild, Aaron Neisingh.
In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; 5 brothers; and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will begin 10:30 am Saturday at Brandon Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Trent Cemetery, Trent, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue.
