James "Jim" Allen Olson

James "Jim" Allen Olson, 67, of Sioux Falls, Lake Madison, and Maui, HI, died July 7, 2014, at Avera McKennan Hospital.

Jim was born April 4, 1947, in Rhinelander, WI. As a toddler he moved with his parents Myrtle and Leonard Olson, to Elk Point, SD. He attended Elk Point schools, graduating in 1965. In 1967 he married Susan Rasmussen and they had 47 years together. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and after discharge attended USD School of Business, graduating in 1972. He began his career in the insurance business with the St. Paul Companies. He and Sue lived in St. Paul, Florence, KY, Cincinnati, OH, and Aberdeen, SD, as he established his career. He moved to Sioux Falls in 1979 and worked for Culbert Davis Insurance. In 1981 he established Olson Associates Insurors (now McKinney Olson) and worked in his employee benefits agency, the Olson Group, until he retired in 2012. He built Callaway's Restaurant in 1997, adding the Pub in 1999. Later Foley's and Tre were added to what is now Pinnacle Hospitality.

He is survived by his wife Sue; his daughter Amy (Brian) Miller; son Tim (Heather) Olson; his six beloved grandchildren Steven, Brandon, and Nathan Miller and Kaitlin, Lauren, and Harrison Olson. His surviving sisters are Myra (Dan) Schroedermeier, Sue Karlen, and Lynne (Melvin) Donnelly.

He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran and an associate member of Kihei Lutheran in Maui.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Feeding South Dakota Backpack Program, Gloria Dei Youth Ministries, or .

Visitation with the family present will be at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 5500 East 57th Street, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, July 10, 2014. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 11, 2014, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
