Barbara Preloger

Barbara Jean Preloger, loving wife and mother, treasured friend, compassionate teacher, talented musician, and inspiring role model, joined the loving embrace of her Savior on Sunday, July 20, while surrounded by her family.

Barb was born to William and Jean Hoffmann on February 11, 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and graduated as valedictorian from Milwaukee Lutheran High School in 1970.

She studied education and music at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude in 1974. She went on to earn her master's degree in church music from Concordia University Chicago in 1978.

Barb was united in marriage with Robert (Bob) Preloger on June 29, 1974. During their 40 years together, Bob and Barb lived in Oak Park, Illinois, Fargo, North Dakota, and Sioux Falls.

A gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Barb taught fifth grade at St. Andrews Lutheran School in Park Ridge, Illinois, and served the Sioux Falls School District for fifteen years, teaching language arts, social studies and music. She retired in 2010.

A talented and life-long musician, Barb served as organist for Lutheran congregations in Milwaukee, Chicago and Fargo. In Sioux Falls, she was organist for Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed serving as accompanist for The Augustana Choir during its annual Christmas Vespers.

Barb found ultimate joy and fulfillment in being a mother to her three children, John Eric (32), Erin Michelle (30) and Matthew Robert (28) and in being a wife to Bob -- her best friend, favorite dinner date, and fellow "Seinfeld" fan. She was a voracious reader and loved crossword puzzles and board games -- particularly Scrabble, which she loved playing whenever the kids were home.

Along with Bob, she previously served as president of the Lincoln High School Bandparents Association, and was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians.

Determined to live life to the fullest, Barb was known for her gentle kindness, her sense of optimism and her quiet intellect. She was always interested in knowing how others were doing and treasured her moments with family and friends.

Barb is survived by her loving husband, Bob; three children, John (Columbus, Ohio), Erin and her husband Jeff Freund (Denver, Colorado), and Matt (Minneapolis, Minnesota); brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Joan Preloger (Seymour, Indiana), and sister-in-law Vicki Hoffmann (Oak Park, Illinois); four nephews and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Jean, and by her brothers, William and Robert Hoffmann.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the members of Sanford Health's dialysis and nephrology units and to the cardiology team at Independent Medical Arts.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, at Miller Funeral Home (507 S. Main Avenue). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church (909 W. 33rd Street).

Memorials may be directed to Augustana College.
