Bernard M. Kennedy

Bernard Miles Kennedy, age 87, of Sioux Falls, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Dougherty Hospice House. He was born September 18, 1926, in Hensel, ND, to John and Celia Kennedy. He graduated from Cavalier, ND High School and attended Dakota Business College of Fargo. Bernard entered military service in the US Army in 1950, receiving training as a surveyor and attained the rank of Sergeant, with deployment to Germany as part of a bridge-building unit. Following his honorable discharge in1952, Bernard was employed by Ford Motor Company and remained a loyal Ford man throughout his entire life. Bernard married Leona Glatzl on August 11, 1956 and resided in Fargo, ND until 1968. Bernard and Leona then moved to Marshall, MN, with their three sons, where he was employed as a territory manager in heavy truck equipment sales by Charles Olson and Sons. The Kennedys moved to Sioux Falls in 1981, where Bernard became Vice President of Northern Truck Equipment of Sioux Falls. Bernard and Lee enjoyed thirty summers of memories with family at their cabin on Nest Lake in Spicer, MN, where they also made life-long friends.

Bernard was a long time member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Bernard is survived by his wife, Leona, three sons, Miles (Mary) Kennedy of Coon Rapids, MN; Mark (Shelly) Kennedy of Elk River, MN; and David (Tracy) Kennedy of Jefferson, SD; seven grandchildren, Margaret (Christopher) Mott, Mallory, Jacob, Jordan, Benjamin, Tyler and Cole Kennedy, and brother-in-law, Ralph (Carol) Glatzl of Rapid City. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Barbara, and five brothers, Cecil, Warren, George, Manvel and Lawrence. Visitation will be at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, on Thursday, August 7th from 5 - 8 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm. Celebration of Christian Burial Mass will be at Christ the King Catholic Church on Friday, August 8 at 10:30 am followed by luncheon at the church. Burial will be at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Sioux Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial be made to the or Dougherty Hospice House. The family is grateful for the excellent care provided by the staff at Dougherty Hospice House.
