Michael "Mick" Schleich, age 67, died Friday, August 9, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Church with a prayer service and rosary at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Cemetery with military rites.
Michael James "Mick" Schleich was born March 22, 1947 in Mitchell to George and Gladys (Sudbery) Schleich.
He attended school in Alexandria and Letcher and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1965. After graduation he studied at the School of Mines before entering the Navy in 1967 and was honorably discharged in 1971. Mick was an Aviation Electronic Technician (radar) Airman in the US Navy. Also was in the Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, he operated the radar while flying into the eye of hurricanes.
After the Navy he started his communication career with Northwestern Bell in 1971 working in Madison, Sioux Falls and Mitchell. He retired from Quest Communications in 2007 after 36 1/2 years of service.
Mick married Myra Kobernusz on September 24, 1983 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, SD and was a member to St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD.
Mick enjoyed gardening, grilling his steaks and having coffee with his many friends.
Grateful for sharing his life are wife Myra and his best bubby and pal, son Sam of Alexandria; mother Gladys Schleich of Mitchell; sisters Sandy (Charlie) Degen of Alexandria and Deb (Jeff) Ellis of Mitchell; brother-in-law Mark (Mary Jo) Kobernusz of Brandon, SD; sister-in-law Sheila Kobernusz of Sioux Falls and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father George Schleich and in-laws Bernard and Shirlene Kobernusz.
