A Memorial Mass for Helen Mary Margaret McGuire, age 89, is scheduled for Friday, January 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, SD, with visitation one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the mass. A celebration of Helen's life will also be held in Minneota on Saturday January 26, with visitation at the Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Minneota from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church. A luncheon will follow the services. Burial will be at St. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery in Taunton.

Helen died at the Golden Living Center in Olivia, MN on Saturday, January 19. Helen (Swedzinski) McGuire, the oldest of five children, was born June 3, 1923, in Canby, MN to Frank and Winnifred (Boulton) Swedzinski. She grew up in rural Taunton, MN and graduated from Minneota High School in 1941. Helen then attended St. Cloud Teacher's College. Her first teaching assignment was in Sacred Heart, MN. She went on to teach children of military families in England, Japan, France, and Spain.

Helen married George (Mac) E. McGuire in Spain in 1969. They made their home in Medinaceli, Spain, where she continued to teach. Together, they enjoyed entertaining and hosting their many friends and relatives. In 1986, Helen and Mac moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where Mac died on December 21, 1987.

Helen was active in the Retired Teachers Association and gave countless hours to the Serra Club (helping seminarians), Catholic Daughters and Christ the King Parish. She spent many Christmas overnights helping the homeless at St. Francis House.

In September of 2011 she moved to the Madison Avenue apartments and Minneota Manor in Minneota, MN. At the time of her passing Helen resided at the Golden Living Center in Olivia, MN.

Helen is survived by sisters Dorothy Stake of Lennox, SD and Ruth Jacob of Simi Valley, California; brothers, Frank Swedzinski and Tom Swedzinski (Madeline) of Porter, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers-in-law Bill Stake and Bob Jacob, sister-in-law Elly Swedzinski and niece Julle Stake.

Memorials are preferred to Christ the King Parish, St. Francis House or Field Lights of Achieve, all of Sioux Falls, SD. Blessed be her memory.
