Dale Brown, 84, Mitchell, died Saturday, February 23, 2013, at the Wakonda Heritage Manor in Wakonda, SD. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 28, 2013, 10:30 AM, at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday evening with Masonic Services at 7:00 PM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund has been established.
Dale LaVere Brown was born December 26, 1928 at DeSmet, SD, to Earl and Iso (Muser) Brown. He grew up and attended school at Erwin, SD and graduated from Erwin High School in 1946. He was in the US Army for four years and served in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. He returned to South Dakota and graduated from Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls. On November 17, 1956 he married Mona L. Overbaugh at Luverne, MN. They lived in Pierre where he was employed by the South Dakota Department of Transportation. They moved to Mitchell in 1958, where he worked for Jerry Ross Accounting, then General Motor Equipment. Dale worked at Bauer Dental Studio as bookkeeper and office manager for most of his career, retiring in 2004. Over all these years Dale also did independent bookkeeping and tax preparation for D & L Implement and many other individuals and businesses. He was a member of Resurgam Lodge No. 31, Eastern Star Starlight Chapter #41, the El Riad Corn Palace Shrine Club, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his life partner of 15 years, Carole Wirt of Mitchell, three children: Laurie Brown of Vermillion; Julie Jones of Sturgis; Douglas Brown and wife Robbie of Litchfield, MN; five grandchildren: Ian Steckelberg of Rapid City; Tess Jones of Sturgis; Ryan, Bryce and Corey Pritchett of Litchfield MN, and one brother, Joseph Brown of Dakota, MN.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mona in 1996, his son Robert Craig Brown in 1994, two sisters, Eva McKibben and Joyce Long and two brothers, Arleigh "Pat" Brown and Frank Brown.
