Lois Frances Johnson

1932 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Lois F. Johnson

Lois Frances (Anderson) Johnson of Vermillion passed away at Wakonda Heritage Manor on Tuesday, April 2, at the age of 80.

She was born July 30, 1932 in Circle, Montana, and married Lewis John Hahn (d. 1966) in Sioux Falls in 1952. Lois married Kenneth Arthur Johnson (IBEW 426 Sioux Falls) in 1972 and lived in Worthing, South Dakota, until moving to Vermillion in 2010.

Following in her parent's footsteps, Lois, along with her immediate family, was a welfare foster parent in both the States of Kansas and South Dakota for 57 years, retiring in 2009. Among her more than 200 foster children were many with special needs. Lois (affectionately known by all as Grandma) also ran a day-care center in her home in Worthing for 24 years. Lois enjoyed quilting, embroidering, scrapbooking, canning, collecting dolls, and listening to music, especially the "three tenors."

Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Lewis Hahn; her husband of 22 years, Kenneth Johnson (d. 1994); her parents, Leroy and Francis (Basche) Anderson; her son William (Bill) Leroy Banks; her brothers Gerald A. and Orval (Beatrice) Anderson; and her niece Debbie Langford.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Barry (Peggy) Banks, of Vermillion; her daughter-in-law, Teresa Banks of Bradshaw, Nebraska; her granddaughter Bobbie Lee (Shannon) Halverson, and her great-grandson Stephan Halverson, of Cook, Minnesota; her grandson Josh Banks of Randolph, Nebraska; her sister Avis Blumer of Beresford; her brother Stanley (Joanne) Anderson of Sioux Falls; her brother Arlo (Marge) Anderson of Valley Springs; nine nieces and nephews; and lifetime friends Lou and Joan Latendresse of Centerville and Karen Gibbs of Vermillion.

Visitation with the family will be held at the Hansen Funeral home on Friday, April 5, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A celebration of the lives of both Lois and her son, Bill Banks (d. March 20, 2013), will be held at Cornerstone Church in Vermillion on Saturday, April 6, at 3:00 PM, with Pastor Devon Davoux officiating. Interment will follow for both Lois and her son, Bill, at the Worthing, SD, Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Lois' many years as a foster parent, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Children's Inn, 409 N. Western Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57104-5607.
