Jeannette "Jan" Gibbs Obituary
Jeannette "Jan" Gibbs

Jeannette (Jan) R. Gibbs, 88, of Sioux Falls, S.D., passed away in Springfield, Missouri, on April 4, 2013, after a long, full life.

Jan was born Dec. 25, 1924 in Oakland, California. While attending college in the San Francisco area, she participated in the war effort through war bond drives, in the Nurse Cadet program and in the Stage Door Canteen and USO programs. One day in 1943, on her daily streetcar commute, she met her future husband, Frank Gibbs. On February 7, 1947, Jan married Frank in Berkley, California. They were married 66 years. When they married Jan put aside career aspirations as a nurse and worked as a dental technician to help put her new husband through law school. After Frank's graduation they settled in Sioux Falls.

Jan had a servant's heart with the gift of hospitality. She had a smile and a word of encouragement for everyone. In addition to supporting her husband and family, she served her community through numerous venues, including PTA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Volunteers of America, church groups, and assisting the elderly. She joyfully served in both hands-on and leadership roles. She opened her arms & her home to 7 foreign exchange students, numerous missionaries, artists and various people in need. She was always available to help her friends and family. She was a living example of the old saying that "To have a friend you must first be a friend." Jan had many friends. Her life was spent serving others, and in doing so, looked Heaven in the face.

She was preceded in death by her parents John & Johanna Rysdorp and by one grandson.

Jan is survived by her husband Frank, by a brother, John Rysdorp of Mercer Island, Washington; by her four children, Jeff Gibbs (Sharon) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Anne Hernandez of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Patricia Knox (David) of Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, and Barbara Gifford of Westerville, Ohio, and by nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Rev. Steve Anthes will be officiating. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Girl Scout Council - Dakota Horizons (Sioux Falls) or Inspiration Hills Camp & Retreat Center (Inwood, IA).
