John Baker Anderson was born on August 5, 1925, on his parents' farm north of Bryant, SD. He was born the son of Orsted C. and Lucile (Baker) Anderson. He loved the farm and spent his entire life there. John received his education from the Bryant school system and graduated from Bryant High School in 1943. John entered the United States Marine Corps in 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre at many naval bases in the role of motor patrol dispatcher. Upon being honorably discharged in 1946, "Big John" could hardly wait to return to the family farm to till the land, raise cattle, and ride his horses.
John was united in marriage to Greta L. Hjelm on June 18, 1961, and they continued to farm and raise their two children on the family farm. Loving his family and farming were John's life. One could never say that he retired from farming and raising cattle. Until his passing, John continued to have an avid interest in what farm activities were going on, and the daily phone calls from his daughter accounting for her latest exploits and adventures.
John was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bryant, SD, and Bryant American Legion; he also took part in his local community, including serving on several boards.
Survivors who are grateful for having shared in John's life are his wife, Greta; one son, Jon T. (Deborah) Anderson of Bryant, SD; Susan M. Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren: Jacob and Malorie Anderson and John B. and Nathan Bachman; two step-grandchildren: James Martin and Nicole (Michael) Harmon; one brother: Gerald G. (Charmaine) Anderson of Watertown, SD; one sister-in-law, Gea Amundson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Verona Thue; one brother, Gene Anderson; and an infant brother, Donald.
