Richard Arlen Thompson, age 81, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Dell's Nursing and Rehab in Dell Rapids. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 16, at the First United Methodist Church, 401 So. Spring Ave., Sioux Falls. Visitation will be 2:00 pm Weds, with the family present from 5-7:00 pm, May 15, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 So. Main, Sioux Falls.
Richard "Dick" Thompson was born April 26, 1932, in Dell Rapids to Reuben and Alma (Krogstad) Thompson. He grew up on a farm near Renner, SD and attended school at Thompson School in rural Minnehaha County. Dick graduated from Baltic High School in 1950. After high school, he worked at John Morrell and Co. in Sioux Falls. Dick served in the United States Army in Oklahoma, Nevada, and Germany from 1952-1954 during the Korean Conflict. He married Betty Jane Kettleson on September 21, 1955. He worked in general construction and owned Thompson Construction Company.
After retiring, Dick pursued his love of classic cars and restored a 1931 Model A Roadster with a rumble seat. He was also working on a 1931 pick-up and enjoyed being a member of the Dakota Territories Model A Club. Dick also spent a great deal of time in his shop working on various woodworking projects.
Those left to cherish Dick's memory include: his children, Barb (Brad) Nesbitt of Urbandale, IA, and Greg Thompson of Newark, DE; two grandsons, Cody (fiance, Jennifer Gerry) of Sioux Falls, and Nick (Amy) Nesbitt of Grimes, IA; one great-grandson, Griffin Nesbitt of Grimes, IA; one brother, Larry (Betty) Thompson of Baltic, SD; two nephews and their children, Todd (Deanna) Thompson, and Troy (Ann) Thompson, all of Baltic, SD; and numerous other relatives and friends. Dick is preceded in death by: his wife of 49 years, Betty; his parents; and a long lineage of Norwegian Pioneers.
