Paul Arneson Obituary

Paul Arneson

Paul Arneson, native son of Roberts County, South Dakota, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Medicalodge Care Center in Butler, Missouri. Paul was born on October 31, 1942, in Wheaton, MN to Joe and Alice Arneson. He spent his childhood on the family farm. He attended East Harmon country school for the first 8 years of his education. He attended high school in Rosholt, graduating Valedictorian in 1960. After graduating magna cum laude from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, he attended Harvard University and graduated cum laude with a doctorate in law in 1967. He was recruited by a prestigious law firm in New York City, and, after 4 years, moved to Washington, D.C., where he became a partner in a corporate law firm. He worked in D.C. for over thirty years, representing many corporations. He was a well-liked and respected advocate for his clients in the national political arena. He and his wife, Nancy, settled in Kansas City, Missouri, and lived there several years. Paul was semi-retired, working occasionally as a mediator. Paul never defined himself only as an attorney, but, rather, as a loving husband, brother, nephew, cousin, step-father, grandfather and loyal friend. The people in his life were his most precious assets and his greatest joy. Paul was a musician, photographer, inventor, writer and was constantly learning. Paul is survived by his wife, Nancy, his brother Joel, his aunts, Martha Sanden, Pearl Krause, Leona Diedrich and Pauline Cole, his Petrich and Arneson cousins, his step-daughters, Erin and Whitney and his granddaughter, Emma. A memorial service will be held in Rosholt, SD, Saturday, August 17, 2013, 11 AM at Trondhjem Lutheran, the church of his boyhood. Nancy--Paul was my dear friend in law school and for our whole careers thereafter. I learned this sad news from Larry Pressler last week, and he told me of your great devotion to Paul. You have my deepest sympathies.

Paul was a good friend and advisor during my years in D.C. We often met for lunch to discuss current events in Congress. He was always loyal to his friends and associates, and his word was bond. Nancy, you and the world will miss this good man and for that we wish you our deepest sympathies.
We will remember him fondly for a very long time.
