Norman A. Koehn, 100, of Brookings, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at United Living Community, in Brookings. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at Rude's Funeral Home, in Brookings.
Norman was born on April 26, 1913, in Douglas County, SD, the son of William and Martha (Wenzel) Koehn.
Norman was a graduate of the Parkston High School in 1931. He continued his education at Nettleton Commercial College, graduating in 1932, the Southern State College teaching certificate program in 1933 and graduating from the University of South Dakota in 1936. After receiving his education he taught rural school for one year and was employed in the central accounting office of Chevrolet Manufacturing in Kansas City for three years. He was united in marriage to Doris Klinger on February 5, 1942, in Sioux Falls, SD. Norman served in the Army Air Force from 1943 until 1945 during WWII in the United States and South Pacific. After his return from the military, they lived in Parker, and Centerville, SD. He was a partner in a retail business in Parker from 1939 to 1946, and in a retail business and public accounting service in Centerville until 1959. In 1960, they moved to Brookings, SD. Norman was then employed as a field auditor by the State Department of Audits until 1968, when he was employed as comptroller for South Dakota State University until his retirement in 1978. Following his retirement, he was employed part time as fiscal officer for the State office of the Council on the Humanities for 11 years.
He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Golden K Kiwanis, VFW, AARP, BARTA, Public Accountants Association, SDSU Retired Faculty Association, Volunteer Service Bank, and founded the Low Vision Support Group. Over the years, he served on many church and community volunteer activities. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, spending winters in Arizona, Florida, and Texas and especially spending time with family and friends.
Norman is survived by his children Norma (Darryl) Ganter of Brookings, SD, Rodney (Joy) Koehn of Bloomington, MN, Douglas (Mica) Koehn of Marshall, MO; six grandchildren, Chelsea, Christopher, Chanelle, Chadron, Deanne, Dawn; two great grandchildren, Jorden and Abigail; one brother Harold Koehn of Parkston, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doris, one sister Edna, and one brother Emil.
