Ilene Grace Hink Obituary
Ilene Hink

Ilene Grace (Meyers) Hink, 88, formerly of 400 E. Sunnybrook Dr., Sioux Falls, died on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Good Samaritan Village. Two daughters, a sister, and brother-in-law were with her when she went to God.

Ilene, the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth Meyers, was born in Hartington, NE on March 12, 1925. The family moved to Yankton, SD in 1927, and Ilene grew up there and graduated from Yankton High School. The family moved to Sioux Falls in 1943 following Ilene's graduation.

Ilene worked at various jobs, her most memorable being at Sioux Falls Music, where she met her soul mate, Edwin Hink. They married October 30, 1950. Following their marriage, they lived in Rapid City and Omaha, NE for a few years before moving back to Sioux Falls. For 22 years Ilene worked as the manager of the café at Sunshine Foods located at 14th Street and Second Avenue in Sioux Falls. She retired in 1987. Ilene and Ed enjoyed dancing to big band music and bowling in a senior mixed league together.

In "retirement," Ilene became what she had wanted to be - a nurse. She cared for her aging parents until their death. She was the major force in Ed's recovery from a heart attack and his subsequent years of ill health, keeping him happy in her love and care. She also cared for a family friend in his last years and illness.

Ilene lived with her daughters Patrice and Mary Beth for five years until her dementia progressed to the point where she needed professional care. The family is grateful to the caring staff at the Daybreak Program of the Center for Active Generations, where Ilene spent her days while her daughters worked. Their help enabled Ilene to live at home much longer than otherwise possible. The kindness and care of the staff at the Special Care Unit at Good Samaritan Village are also greatly appreciated.

Ilene was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral for 70 years and a member of Cathedral Club and the Moose Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her four children, Thomas (Beth) Hink, Casper, WY; Susan (Jim) Dews, Canton, GA; Patrice Hink and Mary Beth Hink, both of Sioux Falls; sisters Deanna (Don) Johnson, Helena, MT, and Connie (Tom) Butz, Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, John (Meredith) Hink, Onalaska, WI; Tony (Sunnona) Hink, Casper, WY; and Laura (Matt Spence) Dews, Canton, GA; six great-grandchildren; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, brother Duane Meyers, and three sisters, Angeline Scherschligt, Edith Lockman, and Donna Devine.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Daybreak Program, 2300 W. 46th St., Sioux Falls, SD 57105.

The family will be present beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, for visitation with family and friends, followed by a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at St. Joseph Cathedral with interment at St. Michael Cemetery.
