Milton O. Steen, 95, died on October 28, 2013 at Bethany Home, in Brandon SD. He was born June 23, 1918 to Otto and Milla Steen on a farm near Jasper, MN; the youngest of 3 boys. He helped with the farming and then attended Augustana College. During the depression his family moved to a farm near Valley Springs.
Milt married Elinor Carlson of Garretson, SD on October 24, 1942 in Seattle, Washington while Milton was in the Navy. They have been married for 71 years. They were blessed with four children: Ordell, Betty, Norman, and Jim. In March of 1966, after the death of Elinor's sister and her husband, two nieces, Ann and Marie Monrad, became part of the family.
Milt enlisted in the Navy when Pearl Harbor was bombed and became Chief Petty Officer. After WWII, Milt worked for 32 years with Fire Underwriters Inspection Bureau. Milt was an active volunteer in church and community organizations, including the Boy Scouts, church council, church choir, and Norse Glee Club. He was secretary for Bethany Lutheran Home Board for over 20 years. Milt always enjoyed camping, canoeing, hiking, horseshoes and was an avid hunter for pheasants, ducks, geese, deer and antelope. Milt and Elinor also enjoyed fishing in the summer as well as traveling to see new places and visiting family and friends. Their trip to Sweden and Norway was a highlight because they met the people and the places that were part of their family history. Woodworking was Milt's hobby and many people have been recipients of his skills.
Following Elinor's fall and hospitalization in July of 2009, life became more difficult for them. Milton's love and concern for Elinor became more evident as her life changed, and his life became increasingly challenging as his eyesight and hearing failed. His family and his faith were central to his life.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth, an infant brother and many family and friends. He is survived by his wife Elinor and their four children and spouses: Ordell and Kathy Steen of Williams Lake, BC Canada; Betty and Ray Arveson of Nisswa, MN; Norm and Cheryl Steen of Woodland Park, CO; Jim and Colleen Steen of Sioux Falls, SD; and Ann Monrad and Marie Monrad of Berkeley, CA; as well as 8 grandchildren and spouses and 11 great grandchildren.
