Family-Placed Death Notice
PILKINGTON, James James Pilkington, son of James and Sylvia Pilkington, died on June 6, 2013 of cancer. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1942, Jim attended preparatory school at the Loomis School in Windsor, Connecticut. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and received his masters degree at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He completed the course work for a Ph.D. in French literature at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. During this period, Jim taught in the classroom and also taught at Denison University in Granville, Ohio during an interval between his masters degree and his pursuit of a Ph.D. Jim's love of French and France continued throughout his life. He had an equal love for the classroom and intended to combine the two by making the teaching of French his career. With a lack of French teaching positions, however, his professional life took other directions. In 1970, he went to work for the May Company and two years later accepted a job at the National Bank of Washington in Washington, DC. He moved from the bank to the American Bankers Association and then to the National Council of Savings Institutions. During this time, Jim taught during the evening at the American Institute of Banking. He also developed a love for the podium and created and spoke at hundreds of banking conferences and seminars. During his last two years in Washington, Jim volunteered as a teacher of English as a Second Language at the Adult Refugee Center of Arlington County, Virginia. At the age of 48, Jim quit his job, sold his house, put his furniture in storage, and moved to France for a much needed break from work. He lived in Paris for a few months and then moved to a town on the French Riviera near St. Tropez. During this time, he traveled extensively in France, Italy and Spain. After seven months in France, Jim moved back to Washington and began his search for a new position. That search ended when Jim received an offer from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to be a Community Affairs Officer in a new program at the FDIC. Jim moved to the FDIC's regional office in Atlanta for the position. During his fourteen years there until his retirement in 2004, Jim encouraged banks to meet the credit needs of under-served communities, promoted regulations and programs that protected consumers, and worked with banks, government and community-based organizations on community development initiatives. Jim also served as a subject matter expert at industry conferences and meetings. During his retirement, Jim continued to travel to France and to numerous other countries. Jim's memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 634 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30308. Interment of his ashes will immediately follow the service in the All Saints' cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Covenant Community, Inc., a residential life stabilization program for addicted men, located on the campus of All Saints and administered by the church. Jim leaves behind many close friends and is survived by his partner, Benjamin Klopfenstein, M.D., of Paris, France.

I just found out about Jim's death; so sorry to hear it. Ihad hoped on visiting Jim but I haven't had his latest phone #. Jim and I were good friends and shared an apartment together at the University of Wisconsin. I saw Jim regularly in Washington and a couple of times in Atlanta. Jim was a considerate community oriented person who loved life and good food. My sincere condolences to his partner, who I never got to meet. Love, Jeff
