ETHERINGTON Jr., Ned*
ETHERINGTON, Jr., Ned Ned Martin Etherington Jr. passed away on Monday April 25, 2016 at the age of 72. He had lived in Roswell, GA since 1993 and died unexpectedly at Emory University Hospital after complications from surgery. Ned was born in Shelbyville Kentucky on February 25, 1944 to Marguerite Clements and Ned Martin Etherington and spent his early childhood in Bagdad, KY, with his grandparents and beloved aunt and uncle, Hazel and Cecil Shaw. Later he lived in Louisville, KY where he finished school and began a lifelong love of music and playing the guitar with friends especially in a local group, The Crosstowns. He served in the Army Reserves and married Catherine Geren Etherington in 1975. Ned had a entrepreneurial spirit and started successful companies in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia including Real Estate Executives, EPCOT, Inc., a home building company in Louisville, Lexington, and Nashville, TN, and Alliance Recovery Center Inc., an addiction treatment program in Georgia with locations in Decatur, Conyers, and Athens, GA. After Alliance Recovery Center began in 1996, Ned saw the need to improve services for those in need of treatment for addiction to opiate drugs, and he effectively raised the bar for treatment services across the state of Georgia by providing quality services and promoting cooperation in the field through his leadership. For many years Ned served on the board of the Opioid Treatment Providers of Georgia and worked with various agencies to reduce stigma and improve treatment across the state. He loved his staff and clients and mentored many others within the treatment field and beyond including his two sons who are following in his footsteps. Ned truly enjoyed the life he had created with his family. Ned loved the daily pleasures and dialogue of life, work & business, food, camaraderie, laughter, music and looking ahead to the future and the possibilities it could bring. Every year Ned looked forward to springtime because it brought back warm weather, The Master's, and The Kentucky Derby. These offered him the opportunities to enjoy the company of family, friends, colleagues and to have something good to eat, drink, and talk about. He is survived by his wife Cathy and his two children, Brook A. Etherington and his fiance Heather Chapman, and John Martin Etherington. Ned also leaves behind many other family and friends especially sister-in-law Peggy Ruth Geren and her daughter Natalie and son-in-law Brian Carver, mother-in-law Peggy A. Geren, brothers-in-law William and John Geren, cousin Glen Black and Kim, dear friends Stu and Ellen Schmidt, Kenny and Genie Lee, Floyd Perkinson, and Gary Broadnax. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday May 14th from 4pm to 7pm at the Avondale Lake House at 59 Lakeshore Dr, Avondale Estates, GA 30002. Directions are available on their website http://thelakehouseatavondale.com . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a memorial fund established in his name through the Opioid Treatment Providers of Georgia to educate and advocate for persons across the state who are in need of treatment for opiate addiction. Please send any charitable contributions to: The Opioid Treatment Providers of Georgia, 2607 Ledo Road, Albany, Ga. 31707.
