PELKY, Carol* - Hapeville  
PELKY, Carol Carol Lee Pelky, 75, of Hapeville GA passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta from complications of COPD/Emphysema. Born July 6, 1939, in Bay City, Michigan, daughter of the late Louis H. Gust and the late Edna E. Goebel. She was preceded in death by her Husband of 45 years, Joseph R. Pelky. She is survived by her son, Randy J. Pelky (Anna) of Sharpsburg GA; Daughter Cheryl Kelley of Hapeville, GA; Son Thomas Pelky (Dayna) of Cumming GA, Daughter Kristi Mundt (Adam) of Newnan GA. Grandchildren Joseph Kelley, Steven and Christina Pelky, Abby Pelky, Carson and Davis Mundt. Carol grew up in Gladwin Michigan and graduated from Gladwin High School in 1957. Carol moved to Washington, DC, to work for the FBI where she met and married Joe on April 25, 1959. They moved to Tewksbury, Mass. where they had their 3 older children. Carol worked for Wang Laboratories and the IRS. The family moved to Hapeville, GA in August 1972, where they had their youngest daughter. Carol resided in Hapeville for the rest of her life. She worked for 10 years and retired from Wachovia Bank in 2004. She was active in her community and an officer in her Neighborhood Association for several years. Carol enjoyed her family time, friends, crafts, shopping, baking and adored her grandchildren. Carol was a very giving and fun-loving person and all that knew her cherished her friendship. She will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 20th at the Hapeville First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paige Pritchard officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. A reception to further celebrate Carol's life will follow the service at the Norton Arts Center in Hapeville. PIATT, Jack* - Miami  
PIATT, Jack Jack Rivers Piatt, 91, of Lilburn, GA died December 16th. Jack was born in Miami, Florida, and attended Edison High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after the Pearl Harbor attack and was inducted in what was known as the Miami Platoon. He served in the signal corps of the 1st Marine Division and participated in the battles of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Pelilui. He was awarded the Purple Heart for multiple shrapnel wounds he received at Pelilui. After his Honorable Discharge from the USMC, he returned to his hometown of Miami and began a 36 year career at the City of Miami Police, Fire and Rescue Communications Department. During that time, he was instrumental in developing the department, working emergencies from riots to hurricanes, and retired as Acting Director of the department. His career highlights include being named an Honorary Fire Chief and Honorary Police Chief. His leadership and acumen contributed to the implementation of the 911 emergency system, and the integration of City and County emergency services. He served on the Board of Directors of the City of Miami Federal Credit Union for many years. He was active in the Mahi Shrine since 1954, and served as Potentate in 1994. He was a member of the Alapattah Mason Lodge. He actively participated in other social organizations which include The Royal Order of Jesters, the Anhinga Club, and The Rod and Gun Club. Also, he was active in the Fleet club, and a lifetime member of the Coral Gables Country Club. He married the love of his life in 1948, Lee Bailey, with whom he raised a family. They worked together at the City of Miami throughout their careers, and their trips and adventures around the world included almost every US state, Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and the Caribbean. Married for 63 very happy years, Lee preceded him in death in 2010. He loved building BBQ's, traveling, gardening, living in Florida, and sharing good times with friends and family. Jack is well known for his love of living a joyful life, and his abundant generous spirit. He certainly considered himself blessed with a wonderful family. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Sheryl and Mike Hutson, Kathy and Michael Coleman; three granddaughters Christina James (husband Jeff Fraser), Stephanie (husband Jay Erbesfield), and Wendy Hutson; and two great-granddaughters Isabella and Alexandra Fraser. Jack maintained a strong spirit and active mind, and he passed peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of family. There will be services Friday Dec. 19th 11:00 a.m. at Wages Funeral Home, 3705 Hwy 78 West, Snellville, GA. Sooley, Richard* - Marietta  
SOOLEY, Richard Richard Rhodes Sooley, age 88, of Waleska, Georgia passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014 after a brief illness. Mr. Sooley was born in Milford, Massachusetts and was the son of John and Eleanor Sooley. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served overseas in the Marshall Islands. He was recalled by the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War and was a Morse Code radio operator on a B-36 Bomber. Mr. Sooley received his Bachelor's Degree from Boston University and his MBA in 1960 from Northeastern University, also in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1948, he met Miriam Wiggins for Sunapee, New Hampshire and they were married in 1950. While employed by the United States government, Mr. Sooley served overseas in Saudi Arabia. He liked to say that he spent a January in the sub-Arctic in Labrador and a few summers in the Arabian Desert, as well as travelling to the Middle East to the Far East and from the tropical lands of the Caribbean to the atolls of the Pacific. Richard was a pioneer in the field of computer programming and retired from his work as a systems analyst in 1991. He and Miriam moved to Florida and while there, he taught computer skills on a part-time basis. In 1999, he and Miriam moved to Georgia, where he was employed as an Adjunct Professor at Reinhardt University. In 2006, Mr. Sooley accepted his favorite job, which was teaching elementary school children how to play chess. He spent his later years writing, and he published his political science novel "It's All Straw" in 2013. Mr. Sooley was preceded in death, by his wife, Miriam, after 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his four children. He had three daughters: Barbara and her husband, Shigeji; Victoria: and Mary-Ellen and her husband, Donald. He also had one son, John, and his wife, Heather. He also has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being made by Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, 180 Church Street, Marietta, Georgia. A Funeral Mass will be held on December 19, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 87 Lacy Street, also in Marietta. Visitation will be at the church at 1:30 p.m. just prior to the Mass. Sparlin, Dr. Eugene Edwin* - Marietta  
SPARLIN, Dr. Eugene Edwin July 31, 1929 - December 15, 2014 Dr. Sparlin passed away at home and was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Ann (Skeen) Sparlin and parents, Jay and Beth Sparlin, siblings Bernard Sparlin, Robert Sparlin, Dorothy Wilhoetter, and Audrey Daum. He is survived by his son, Dr. Samuel Jay Sparlin and his wife Lorraine, his daughter Ann Marie Sparlin and husband Gary Fannin; grandchildren Zachary Kyle Skinner, Caroline Marie Skinner, Emily Louise Sparlin, and Clara Ann Sparlin. Gene was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Cleveland High School and Logan Chiropractic College. He moved to Atlanta where he met Virginia. They married and opened Sparlin Chiropractic Clinic in 1954. During his 50 plus years of practice he served as President of the Georgia Chiropractic Association, Chairman of the International Knights of the Chiropractic Round Table, President of the Georgia Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and as a Trustee of Logan College. His contribution to the chiropractic profession included ushering in insurance equality and growing Sparlin Clinic into one of the largest chiropractic offices in the United States which continues to serve after 60 years. Dr. Sparlin was also very active in real estate and investing. His love of family and golf in his later years kept him and Virginia active at their homes in North Carolina and Ft. Lauderdale when they were not traveling with family or friends. Memorial Service will be held at: H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill Chapel 1157 Old Canton Road NE Marietta GA 30068 12/20/2014 Visitation 12:30 p.m. Service 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Life University would be appreciated.
