Family-Placed Death Notice

OLSEN, Andrew Andrew Jeremy Olsen of Chamblee passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013. A Memorial Service/Internment of Ashes will be held Monday, June 24, at 4 PM at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 2601 Henderson Mill Rd, Chamblee, GA, 30341 (770.938.9797.) Andy, a Brooklyn, NY native was born to Kruger Owen Olsen and Katherine Helgesen on April 6, 1937. He attended Avondale HS and earned degrees from Oglethorpe University and the University of Georgia. He served the DeKalb County School system for 30 years. He began his career in 1960 as a science teacher at Cross Keys High School. In 1966 he was appointed by DeKalb School Superintendent Dr. Jim Cherry to work under Director Dr. Lewis Shelton as Assistant Director of Physical Science at the not yet completed Fernbank Science Center which to this day is still "one of a kind." After seven years at FSC, Dr. Cherry called him to be Director of Communications for DeKalb County Schools. He served in this capacity for 19 years until his retirement in 1990, serving under Drs. Jim Cherry, Jim Hinson, and John Freeman. He was an active and life-long member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Decatur Lodge 1602, which later merged with Atlanta 78. At Decatur 1602 he progressed through the Chairs entering the annual competitions held at Jekyll Island each summer. This culminated in one year as Exalted Ruler of Lodge 1602. He gladly served for many years as both local and state Youth Scholarship Chairman. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Helen Coffey Olsen and his children Catherine Cox (James), Andrew Kruger Olsen (Barbara), and Jonathan Scott Olsen (Karen); grandchildren JL, Andrew, Jessica, Jeremy, Nathan and Gavin as well as many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
