Family-Placed Death Notice

NICHOLS, Del DELBERT "DEL" NICHOLS Del Nichols, age 87, of Marietta, Georgia passed away on December 12, 2013. He was born in Evansville, Indiana to John and Nancy Nichols on March 28, 1926. He attended school in Hohenwald, Tennessee and later moved to Evansville, Indiana where at 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force doing his training at Langley Field, Virginia. He served as an aerial nose gunner on B24's in the China Offensive, Southern Philippines, Luzon and Western Pacific. After the service he enrolled in Nashville's Harris School of Art and Design where he graduated as a commercial artist. He became one of the most acclaimed commercial illustrators in the U.S., working in Detroit, Michigan and later moving to Atlanta, Georgia. His early commercial clients included Redbook, Good Housekeeping, GM, and later Coca-Cola, Lucas Industries, and many U.S. agencies. Eventually Mr. Nichols became a fine artist showing his work in galleries across the U.S. such as Ann Jacobs, Period Gallery West in Scottsdale, Arizona, LaPorta, etc. Mr. Nichols is survived by his second wife, Susan Hill Nichols, his sons Kevin Nichols, Richard McGhee, daughters Melanie Sumner and Michelle Ettl, grandsons Matthew Sumner, Chandler Ettl, Christopher, Casey and Cory McGhee, granddaughter Alexis Kruel, great-granddaughter Elleigh Sumner, great-grandsons Cainan, Levi and Micah McGhee. Services and interment will be private.
