Family-Placed Death Notice
GENE CHEATHAM Gene Cheatham, 78 of Acworth passed away Tuesday morning, November 4, 2003. Gene was born in Paulding County on June 26, 1925 and, after graduation from Dallas High School, served his country in the United States Army. He served in the 3rd Armored Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge after landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day. In 1996 he was honored by the citizens of Lierneaux, Belgium during a Armistice Day ceremony, which was followed by a reunion with several members of a family who had hidden him in the basement of a train station in Lierneaux after he became disabled during the liberation of that city. In 1949 he married the former Joyce Nolan of Acworth, who preceded him in death in 1993. He worked at Lockheed as an instrument calibration specialist for 30 years, retiring in 1982. During this time, he began a heating/air conditioning business which he continued until his retirement in 1993. In 1995, he married the former Betty Gizzle of Acworth and continued to be active in many community, church and civic organizations. He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce Nolan Cheatham, his parents Virgil and Maude Cheatham of Acworth and Sarah Lou Jordan of Cartersville. He is survived by his wife Betty Cheatham, daughter Valerie Cheatham and son Anthony Cheatham of Acworth and by his brothers Bill Cheatham, Oliver Cheatham, Ottis Cheatham and Steve Lackley. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 5, 2003, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm and from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Collins Funeral Home in Acworth. Services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at 2:00 pm at the Acworth First United Methodist Church followed by interment at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Acworth.
