J. Ross WILLIS


Family-Placed Death Notice

WILLIS, J. Ross J. Ross Willis, age 62, died December 7, 2013. He was born at Ramie Air Force Base in Puerto Rico on October 30, 1951. He grew up in an Air Force family, in Tampa, FL; Roswell, NM; Limestone, ME; and Goldsboro, NC; as well as Marietta, GA. He graduated from Goldsboro High School, and the University of Georgia School of Journalism. A lifelong gamesman, he especially enjoyed golf, tennis, basketball, and chess. As a young journalist he worked as a photographer and publicist for the Cobb Co. Dept. of Parks and Recreation. For 19 years he worked for Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) as Senior Public Relations Manager and Acting Manager of Corporate Communications. During this time he led the company's media campaign, successfully advocating gas deregulation. He also managed AGL's influential community service awards program and handled media relations support for 13 annual Public Service Commission gas rate cases. Ross was an active community volunteer, who served as the AGL representative to the Georgia Conservancy; team leader in five annual membership drives for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce; Co-Chairman of the Georgia Press Association scholarship fundraising efforts; Chairman of the associate members of the Georgia Press Association, the Georgia Broadcasters Association, the Georgia Association of Newscasters, and the communications section of the Southern Gas Association; and Treasurer of the Atlanta Press Club. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Madeleine and Jason Jarrett, grandaughter Eulah Jarrett; son Robert Willis; mother Margaret Ann (Maggie) Willis Wiedeman; and brother Stephen Willis.
