Family-Placed Death Notice

PARKERSON, Jimmy Lee Jimmy Lee "Jim" Parkerson, 82, died at home of natural causes on Sunday, October 28, 2012. He was born on October 25, 1930, in Detroit, MI, to Atlanta natives, Bill and Elizabeth (Lib) Schmid Parkerson. The family returned to Atlanta, where Jim grew up and attended school. He graduated from North Fulton High School where he met Shirley Brooks, who became his wife of over fifty years. He attended Georgia Tech and played football with the Yellow Jackets until he was recruited by what is now Honeywell International Inc. He transferred to University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where Honeywell was headquartered at the time, and the company sent him to Princeton University for graduate school. He then began a lifelong career with Honeywell in Washington State, where he and Shirley raised their three sons, Victor, Mark and Brooks. As a physicist for Honeywell International Inc., he was responsible for significant projects in aerospace and electronics, such as the design of the electronic security control console for the Twin Towers in New York City, the gyro which enables airplanes to stabilize in flight, and military navigation systems for torpedoes. He was the recipient of Honeywell's H.W. Sweatt Engineer-Scientist Award, given in recognition of an individual's outstanding technical ability and accomplishment of significance for the company and their profession. After his wife Shirley's death in 2002, Jim returned home to the Atlanta area and continued to work for Honeywell as a contractor. He settled in Alpharetta where he met his cherished companion, Bess Finch, in 2004. He is also survived by one son, his grandson Payton Parkerson, great granddaughter Rheanna Parkerson, daughter-in-law Nancy Parkerson and loving Aunts and Cousins. He is predeceased by his sons Victor, Mark and grandson Jeremy, as well as his parents. The family will gather privately to celebrate Jim's life. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to .
