VOGEL, John F. John F. Vogel, 98, of Peachtree City, Georgia, passed away September 28, 2013. Mr. Vogel was born to Fred and Grace Vogel in East Jordan, Michigan and was predeceased by his sister Betty and his first wife Fran Supernaw. John had an interesting and accomplished life. As a young boy, he worked with his father who owned one of the first Standard Oil Gas stations in the U.S. He played piano duets with his sister Betty and oboe in the high school marching band. He always knew he wanted to be an engineer and he graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After being transferred to the Office of the Chief Signal Officer in the second wing of the Pentagon, he worked in staff positions at the AAF headquarters in Air Defense, Radar and guided missile development. He resumed flight training and received both his private and commercial pilot's licenses. He served as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force as well. After leaving the Air Force, John worked as Chief Engineer in the FAA's Aircraft Division in NY. In 1967, he was transferred to Atlanta as Chief of Engineering and Manufacturing for the eight state Southern Region of the Federal Aviation Administration. He was blessed with a long and happy second marriage to Polly Sims Vogel. They married and moved to Peachtree City where they have lived happily for the last 39 years. They have traveled extensively to Alaska, Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, the Caribbean and Mexico. His last major responsibility before retirement in 1976 was to lead a team of FAA Engineers to Brazil on behalf of the U. S. State Department and U. S. Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. Throughout his life, John was committed to community service. He served over 20 years as a volunteer fireman in New York and was a very involved and loyal member of the Peachtree City Rotary Club, serving as President from 1979-80. He received many awards for his dedicated service and had perfect attendance for over 25 years. He and Polly have especially enjoyed being active members of Peachtree City United Methodist Church and the Ad Loy Ho Sunday School Class. John was a devoted husband, father and stepfather, grandparent and great-grandparent. He was loving, honest, dependable and had a great sense of humor and perspective on life. He will be deeply missed. John is survived by his wife, Polly Vogel, his daughter Verna and her husband Cliff Bunting, step-daughter Beverly and her husband Norman Richey, step-son Rick Shoenberger and his wife Hyang-Eun, his grandchildren, Debbie Plechner, PhD, David Plechner and his wife Beth, Brian Plechner and his wife Jessica, John Shoenberer, Rivers Cuomo and his wife Kyoko, James Cuomo, PhD and his wife Lena Cuomo, Sarah Shoenberger and his great-grandchildren, John David, Grace and Luke Plechner and Mia, Kai and Leo Cuomo. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Peachtree City United Methodist Church, Peachtree City. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Peachtree City.
